Arturo di Giuseppe Melocchi

(December 9, 1879 – October 25, 1960) was a distinguished voice teacher who left an indelible mark on the world of opera. Hailing from Milan, Italy, Melocchi began his active teaching career in 1907 and remained an influential figure in the realm of vocal training until his death in 1960. He is best known for his successful mentorship of renowned dramatic tenor Mario Del Monaco and his older brother Marcello Del Monaco, both of whom achieved great acclaim under his tutelage. Furthermore, Melocchi's unique teaching method significantly influenced the vocal technique and artistic growth of the celebrated tenor Franco Corelli. His legacy continues to resonate in the opera world, showcasing the enduring impact of his unique approach to vocal training.

The Melocchi Method

Arturo Melocchi created a unique vocal training system rooted in physiological principles. His method was designed to optimize vocal performance and achieve maximum results in the least time possible. This approach involves lowering the larynx to increase the length of the vocal tract, extending from the vocal folds up into the pharynx and the buccal cavity, ending at the facial lips.

His method also drew influence from Chinese vocal techniques that he learned from a Russian Voice Master, combined with elements of the traditional Italian school, as exemplified by singers like Enrico Caruso and Beniamino Gigli. His techniques emphasized laryngeal and pharyngeal space and freedom, allowing for a more natural and powerful voice projection.
